The sales pitch for IoT rodent monitoring focuses on data and alerts. The day-to-day reality of running a fleet of sensors across dozens of accounts is a maintenance problem: batteries that need replacing, gateways that lose signal, and devices that quietly stop reporting without anyone noticing for weeks.

Planning Around Battery Life, Not Around Surprises

Most sensor units are rated for a year or more of use, but real-world battery life depends heavily on reporting frequency and environmental conditions like temperature extremes in unconditioned spaces. Rather than waiting for a low-battery alert to prompt a scramble, build battery checks into a fixed schedule, such as a quarterly sweep, and stock spares on service vehicles so a dead battery never turns into a missed report.

Connectivity Gaps Are the Real Failure Point

Dead zones inside concrete basements, behind metal equipment, or in large warehouses cause more monitoring gaps than dead batteries do. Before deploying at a new site, walk the space with a signal strength check rather than assuming coverage, and be willing to add a repeater or reposition a gateway rather than placing a sensor somewhere convenient but unreachable.

A dashboard full of green checkmarks means nothing if a third of the fleet has been silently offline. Building a simple device-health review into route management, separate from the pest activity data itself, is what keeps a sensor program reliable enough to stake client reporting on.
