Why False Positives Happen
A trigger that isn’t actually a rodent is usually a placement or environmental issue rather than a hardware failure. Sensors mounted near HVAC vents, doors that swing in strong drafts, or areas with heavy foot traffic from staff or other animals can register false activity. Reviewing a pattern of false positives by location, rather than dismissing them individually, often points to a specific fix like repositioning a unit away from airflow or foot traffic.
Why False Negatives Are the Bigger Risk
A missed detection is harder to catch because, by definition, nothing alerts you to it. False negatives are more often tied to placement gaps than to sensor malfunction: activity occurring outside a device’s detection range, or in an unmonitored area of a site entirely. This is one of the strongest arguments for periodic physical inspection alongside sensor monitoring rather than replacing one with the other outright.
Treating the first few months of any new deployment as a calibration period, with closer manual verification against what the sensors report, builds the kind of confidence in the data that lets an operator eventually rely on it more heavily.
