Almost no commercial account is a blank slate. There’s already a bait station network out there, placed by a previous technician, mapped on a service log, and familiar to the client’s staff. The practical question when introducing IoT monitoring usually isn’t whether sensors make sense — it’s whether to retrofit the existing stations or start the layout over.
The Case for Retrofitting
Retrofitting existing stations preserves institutional knowledge: the previous placement reflects years of observed activity patterns, and the client’s staff already knows where the stations are. It’s also faster and cheaper to deploy, since it skips a full site re-walk. The tradeoff is that legacy placement was optimized for bait checks, not sensor coverage, and a station placed for technician convenience isn’t always where a sensor would catch activity earliest.
When a Fresh Layout Is Worth the Disruption
A full re-layout makes more sense when the existing network has known gaps, when the account is moving to a materially different service model, or when the facility itself has changed significantly since the original placement — a new tenant, a reconfigured loading dock, an added cold room. In those cases, treating the sensor rollout as an opportunity to re-walk the site properly tends to produce better long-term data than preserving a placement map that no longer matches how the building is used.
Most operators land on a hybrid: retrofit the majority of existing stations to control cost and disruption, and add or relocate a smaller number of units where the legacy map clearly doesn’t match current risk areas.
