A rodent sensor is only as good as the location it’s placed in. Operators new to monitoring technology sometimes carry over habits from traditional trap placement, and while the underlying pest biology doesn’t change, the way a site should be mapped for continuous data collection often does.
Start With Traffic Patterns, Not Convenience
Traditional trap checks tolerate a station tucked somewhere out of the way, since a technician will physically inspect it regardless. Sensor placement should instead prioritize documented travel routes: along walls, near utility penetrations, and at entry points identified during the initial inspection. A sensor sitting in a low-traffic corner will report clean data indefinitely without telling you anything useful about the site.
Density and Redundancy Matter More Than People Expect
Thin coverage is the most common reason a new monitoring program underperforms in its first few months. A handful of sensors spread across a large facility can miss activity entirely if rodents are moving through an unmonitored zone. Layering coverage at key corridors, rather than treating every station as equally important, gives a more honest picture of pressure across the site.
Revisit placement after the first thirty to sixty days of data. Early activity patterns almost always reveal that a station or two should move, and treating initial placement as a draft rather than a final layout is what separates programs that deliver accurate trend data from ones that just generate noise.
